Holy Family is a Catholic church serving a diverse community of over 918 families in Auburn, WA. Parishioners come together to worship and celebrate the diverse cultures represented and strive to be a welcoming community that makes everyone feel part of the Holy Family community. We are an adaptable, able to embrace change as we come together, and faith filled community grounded in the liturgy and celebration of sacraments.
The parish of Holy Family, Auburn, was established on Christmas Day, 1907, by His Excellency, the Most Reverend Edward John O’Dea, D.D., Bishop of Seattle. It was created out of the territory of St. Anthony’s, in Kent. Although created a parish, Holy Family was still without a pastor and Fr. Flavin, of St. Anthony’s, continued to administer to the needs of the parishioners.
The parish comprised of only 20 families, but this handful of the faithful was determined to have a church. In 1909, the first Church of the Holy family was begun on the corner of 1st Ave. SW and “E” Street. The church was solemnly blessed on August 8, 1909.
The first resident pastor, Fr. W.B. Hannon, arrived on November 5, 1911. By this time there were 50 families in the parish.
The population of Auburn grew, as did the parish of Holy Family. It became obvious that a completely new parish plant would have to be built, and in 1959 the property on 17th St. SE was purchased. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new parish plant were held on October 14, 1962. The buildings were solemnly blessed on August 11, 1963.
Presently, Holy Family Parish has about 918 families. We are heirs to 117 years of perseverance by the faithful of our area, 61 in nurturing the parish which is now ours. On this base of faith, determination, and prayer, we at Holy Family continue to grow.
We strive to worship God and celebrate the presence of Jesus Christ in Word and the Sacraments as one Holy Family. We seek to open our hearts daily to the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit as we endeavor to be a Catholic Church that puts all people in touch with God. We are building a faith community of hope, love and acceptance that nourishes, comforts and embraces.
